SITE WORK & EXCAVATION

STEVENS engineers & constructors are fully equipped with the industry experience and heavy earthmoving equipment to complete site work and excavation on any scale.

Our skillset includes:

Relocating Utilities
Backfill
De-Watering
Foundation work
Clearing land
Grading
Driveways
Walkways
Excavation
Septic and Sewer Systems
Permitting and more

We tailor each of our projects according to client specifications and national regulations for safety and environmental impact.

One of the classical site work and excavation projects in  STEVENS' portfolio is the Scio Meter Station Earthwork project for Kinder Morgan. We utilized drone technology with on-site engineering to efficiently relocate more than 60,000 cy of dirt.

Our construction team adhered to all local, state and federal regulations for environmental protection and permitting and took special measures to control sediment and prevent erosion. We completed the project using CAT 740 articulating dumps, excavators, rollers, and backhoes. We utilized engineered air bridges to provide safe passage across existing pipelines for our heavy machines — these airbridges allowed for a continual flow of traffic that led to highly efficient excavation and backfill.

A highlight from the project was excavating and transporting the spoils of pad one to pad two for immediate placement for backfill. STEVENS worked with on-site, third-party inspectors and Kinder Morgan to meet and exceed all project specifications.

SHEET & H-PILE

STEVENS has years of successful experience installing H-pile for deep foundation applications. Utilizing the latest pile driving equipment, we drive H-Pile beams into the earth to provide structural support to foundations and sheet pile walls for a variety of industrial clients.

STEVENS completes geotechnical testing as-needed for soil stability and other factors to identify the structural requirements for each project. We understand how to leverage the durability of H-Pile to secure facilities located in challenging soil conditions and active seismic areas.

In one of our exemplary Sheet & H-pile projects, STEVENS  installed the foundation support H-Piling for the cutting-edge Dresden Energy Facility owned and operated by Dominion Energy. The scope of work for this combined cycle power plant involved excavating 19,000 cy and installing 1712 pile, 85,300 LF, and 200 splices.

We completed the excavation in the winter despite severe weather conditions, which allowed us to begin the foundations in early spring and erect the equipment over the summer. We met the proposed 7-week schedule by utilizing 3 pile driving rigs.

We completed the project with impressive results and an outstanding safety standard which secured a subsequent contract with Dresden Energy for facility foundations. Learn more about our Sheet & H-Pile capabilities.

CIVIL CONCRETE

STEVENS is equipped to handle a wide range of civil concrete projects with unique specification requirements. From quantity to temperature and deadlines, our team is experienced with making the impossible happen for our industrial clients.

We have extensive experience with foundation work and will accommodate other site demands for concrete all according to facility demands.

One exceptional civil concrete project that STEVENS handled was PPL Brunner Island. This project was just one of many power industry contracts but involved a few twists. Subcontracted by Shaw, we completed 36,500 cy of excavation, 10,500 cy mass pours of foundations, and we outsourced 8,000 LF of H- pile.

The main challenge we faced was completing all mass pours at an exact 72-degree Fahrenheit temperature, limiting our project deadline to a matter of weeks. Through creative problem-solving and utilizing our many resources, we met the temperature requirement by building our own batch plant on-site, chilling aggregate, substituting ice for water, scheduling overnight pours and injecting the pour site with liquid nitrogen.

In the end, we successfully placed 10,500 cy of mass pour concrete, with an additional 11,000 cy to delight our client and exceed expectations. Learn more about our Civil Concrete Services.

STEEL ERECTION

As one of the most hazardous construction occupations in the U.S., STEVENS takes extensive measures to ensure the safety of all crew members on a steel erection project.

We prioritize safety while adhering to the highest standards for efficiency and quality.

In a showcase steel erection project, STEVENS subcontracted with Black & Veatch, to erect a control building, generation building, combustion turbine building, pump building, and water treatment building for a combined cycle facility in Springdale, Pennsylvania. In addition to erecting these 5 facilities, we also performed substantial excavation work and installed foundations.

A unique aspect of the project involved setting a bridge tress that was assembled on-site. Because of our extensive resources available through our family of companies, we had an adjustable spreader beam designed to raise and secure the bridge tress. STEVENS adhered to the highest standards for safety and efficiency for the duration of this portion of the project, allowing us to finish safely and on-time.

PIPE INSTALLATION

STEVENS Engineers & Constructors takes on pipe installation projects that many other companies won't even consider. With experience, commitment, and quality in mind, we strive for a thorough understanding of project specifications to deliver a successful, long-lasting pipe install every time.

In a showcase of our pipe installation capabilities, we fabricated and installed nearly 40,000 LF of stainless piping between two new continuous casters for Burns Harbor in Northwest Indiana. From material procurement to facility start-up, we completed this project in less than three months, owing in large part to our tip-tig welders and bending capabilities.

For this same project, we completed well over 2,000 heli-arc welds for an upgrade outage of molds and oscillators on an existing caster. To meet project demands, STEVENS implemented a variety of pipes including:

  • Carbon steel
  • 316 stainless
  • 20” to ¾”
  • Standard to XXS

All work for the existing caster was completed in just ten days according to B31.1 code and without a single rejected weld.

PRE-ENGINEERED BUILDINGS

Pre-engineered metal buildings offer flexibility for expansion, rapid construction time, and unlimited options for customization.

STEVENS is proud to offer high-quality, pre-engineered steel buildings through our wholly owned subsidiary, CDMG, a manufacturer's representative from Nucor Building Systems.

CDMG helps clients customize their facility to suit their exact needs, and STEVENS builds the facility for longevity and function.

In a showcase project of our metal building capabilities, STEVENS completed the comprehensive construction for a unique pre-engineered building for Precoat Metals. The 140’x120’ building connects to a 70’x70’ structure using two 20’x20’ tunnels. The project involved 20,000 square feet of siding and 23,500 square feet of standing seam roof.

Our scope of work also included:

Geotechnical reports
Spread footers
Grade Walls
23,000 square feet of floor slab
1000 feet of stormwater piping
Electrical
HVAC
Fire protection
Permitting

We utilized our industry experience and field expertise to finish the floor slab to FF 50/FL 50 specifications enabling the client to operate a coil storage facility using automated forklifts.

Kinder Morgan Utopia Pipeline Project Review for Stevens Engineers and Constructors Project ManagerKinder Morgan

STEVENS performed a very difficult earth moving project for the Utopia Pipeline successfully. Steep terrain, sensitive environmental areas, and several air bridges were built across multiple pipelines to safely move dirt from one area to another. All work was done safely and without incident. All personnel were professional and adapted to the changing weather and site conditions very well.
